Kenyan torture victims win in court

Kenya's constitutional court has ordered the government to pay torture survivors nearly $500,000 in what human rights campaigners consider a land-mark ruling. During the reign of Daniel Arap Moi, the president during the 1980s, secret police kept at least 21 people in a torture chamber for weeks. Human rights defenders believe the ruling opens the door for more claims against the government. Andrew Simmons reports from Nairobi. Raila Hospitalized

Prime Minister Raila Odinga is recuperating at the Nairobi hospital after undergoing surgery on the left side of his head last night to ease what doctors described as a build up of pressure. Raila reportedly checked himself in the hospital on Monday evening feeling exhausted as well as having a severe headache which prompted the doctors to admit him and conduct the operation at night. According to neurosurgeon doctor Oluoch Olunya who performed the surgery, the exercise had been successful and that the prime minister is now under bed rest and as Chris Thairu reports, there was anxiety at the hospital throughout the day as word spread on the premier's hospitalisation. Chaos as Makongeni residents resist eviction

DAILY NATION - " Nairobi's Makongeni residents have began paying rent arrears owed to the Kenya Railways Corporation after waging day-long battles against riot police in attempts to resist eviction. However, a number of evictees who had their properties confiscated by the Corporation will be required to clear all monies owed before getting them back. The Kenya Railways hopes to collect Sh302 million in unpaid arrears for over two years from 2,800 residents. The rent collected from the houses is supposed to benefit Kenya Railways pensioners. Early this morning, a man was shot as police and scores of youth clashed when resident resisted eviction after a notice to pay lapsed. The riots spilled over onto Jogoo road and paralysed traffic."
