Monitor Online "THE government has asked the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, to reconsider his stance regarding the amendments to the Land Act 1998 reminding him that times, situations and levels of development have changed.
The plea contained in the government statement issued on Christmas Eve by Dennis Obbo, the permanent secretary for the Lands Ministry, is urging the Kabaka to rethink his stand in order to reinstate harmony in the country.
'This law is intended to protect the lawful rights of occupants and customary owners of land. It will not protect trespassers and squatters. The [government] therefore, respectfully urges the Kabaka to reconsider his position on the Land Amendments 2007 because they will definitely bring back harmony and good working relationship between tenants and land Lords in Buganda and Uganda at large,' the December 24 statement reads in part."
