Museveni warns Mengo on land

New Vision Online "PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has clarified that the main objective of amending the Land Act is to protect both the tenants and the landlords.

Museveni said poor tenants are unlawfully being evicted from their bibanja (land), adding that he, as President elected by people and Parliament, cannot sit back and relax when people are being displaced.

He said according to the Land Act, tenants could not be evicted unless they had defaulted on the payment of rent (busulu).

Museveni referred to the Land Act of 1928 and that of 1998, which both stress and guarantee tenants’ ownership of their plots."
